In 1999, the Vatican sent her to the GIA — officially as an assistant to Director Albert, quietly as a watchdog over an organization the Church no longer fully controlled. The terms of her bond to Archangel Michael were absolute, and her inability to refuse them became the heaviest thing she carried.

When she was assigned to mentor a young agent named Moming, something shifted. For the first time, she felt the urge to guard someone — not out of duty, but out of something she didn't have a name for yet. Then the orders came from the Vatican, asking her to betray exactly that.
